Key Updates from GNAT and National Council Meeting

These updates highlight commitment of GNAT to improving the welfare and professional development of its members, as well as its resolve to address urgent issues through decisive action. Members are encouraged to stay informed and participate actively in the Association’s initiatives for collective progress.

Significant Increase in Benefits

Effective January 2025, members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) can look forward to an increase in death or retirement benefits. The current benefit of GHS 3,000.00 will be increased to GHS 3,500.00. This decision marks a significant step towards providing better financial security for members in their retirement or in the unfortunate event of death.

Souvenir Distribution for 2023/2024

For the 2023/2024 year, every member will receive a vacuum flask as a souvenir. A dedicated committee is set to advise the leadership on this specific item, ensuring that the distribution is in line with fund allocations and meets members’ expectations.

Upgraded Teachers Fund Online Portal

The Teachers Fund online portal is undergoing an update to enhance its functionality and user experience. Members will be provided with assistance to navigate and utilize the new features effectively.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Allowance

The CPD allowance, aimed at enabling teachers to enhance their professional skills, will be paid in September 2024. This allowance is intended for the 2024/2025 academic year and is crucial for ongoing professional development. However, teachers who retire before September 2024 will not be eligible for this allowance.

Walkout and Laptop Demands

A notable incident at the Council meeting was the walkout by District Chairpersons, who were protesting the delayed provision of laptops. This action led to a press conference and an engagement with the National Executive Committee, resulting in a Commitment Letter from GNAT President Rev. Isaac Owusu. The key points of the letter include:

  • Immediate Supply of Laptops: All outstanding laptops will be supplied to teachers within one month.
  • Resistance to Interference: The Association will resist any interference if a strike is declared due to non-compliance with the National Labour Commission’s directive by the Minister for Education.
  • Potential Strike Action: An indefinite industrial action (strike) will be declared if all outstanding laptops are not supplied by September 15, 2024.
  • Legal Measures: The Association will counter any possible injunction with appropriate legal measures.

The Commitment Letter reflects the Association’s dedication to addressing members’ concerns and ensuring that their demands are met promptly.
