January 9, 2026 Declared Public Holiday to Mark Constitution Day

The general public has been officially informed that Wednesday, January 7, 2026, marks Constitution Day, a statutory public holiday in Ghana.

However, in line with existing public holiday arrangements, and due to the fact that Constitution Day falls on a Wednesday in 2026, the President of the Republic of Ghana has exercised his constitutional powers to adjust the holiday observance.

By an Executive Instrument (E.I.), issued in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, His Excellency the President has declared Friday, January 9, 2026, as a public holiday.

The declaration means that Friday, January 9, 2026, is to be observed as a public holiday throughout the country in commemoration of Constitution Day.

The announcement was signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), and issued on Thursday, January 2, 2026.

Constitution Day commemorates the coming into force of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which laid the foundation for the country’s Fourth Republic and its democratic governance system. The observance serves as a reminder of Ghana’s commitment to constitutional rule, democracy, and the protection of fundamental human rights.
