I Regret Becoming a Teacher: Asuoso SHS Teacher Stabbed in the Eye

A teacher at Asuoso Senior High School (SHS) in the Offinso North Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Ishmael Famous, has expressed deep regret over his decision to pursue a career in education following a violent altercation with a student that left him blind in his left eye.
In an emotional interview with Adom News, Ishmael recounted the tragic incident, which occurred on what initially seemed like a routine Monday morning. His task was simple: ensure that food vendors were not selling to students during class hours. However, what began as a standard duty quickly spiraled into a nightmare that would change his life forever.
“I had stepped outside to carry out my responsibility when I noticed two students in the canteen,” Ishmael explained. “I approached them to send them away, trying to maintain order.
What was meant to be a gentle reprimand soon escalated when one of the students didn’t back down. The situation quickly became aggressive, and the student retaliated violently.”
The situation that followed was a blur for Ishmael, but one thing was clear: the attack left him with severe damage to his left eye, resulting in permanent blindness.
“I never imagined something like this could happen,” Ishmael said, his voice heavy with regret. “I wish I could go back and stop it, but it’s too late now.”

The traumatic experience not only robbed Ishmael of his vision but also shattered his sense of safety and security at his workplace.
What was once a place where he dedicated himself to his students became a space marred by violence. The teacher, known for his calm and reserved nature, now vowed never to confront a student in such a manner again.

The news of Ishmael’s injury sent shockwaves through his family. They were devastated to learn that their beloved relative had been the victim of such an attack.
“I never thought I’d be the victim of something like this,” Ishmael shared, his voice tinged with sorrow. “It was a shock to everyone, especially my family. I’m the last person they would expect to be involved in such an incident.”
Life has been exceedingly difficult for Ishmael since the incident. The physical pain from his injury is only the beginning. The emotional toll, the stigma, and the overwhelming sense of isolation have weighed heavily on him.
“I had to pay for my own medical bills, and it feels like I’m living in a constant battle,” he explained. “It’s not just the injury; it’s everything that came with it — the judgment, the whispers behind my back, the people who look at me differently.”

This harrowing story highlights the fragile balance between authority and respect in educational settings and serves as a reminder of the lasting consequences of violence.
Ishmael’s pain, both physical and emotional, underscores the often-unseen toll such traumatic events can take on individuals and their communities.
For Ishmael, life at Asuoso SHS will never be the same. Neither will he.
“I just want to move forward,” he said quietly. “But it’s hard when you’re living with something that constantly reminds you of that day.”
As Ishmael continues to process the trauma and its aftermath, his experience serves as a poignant reflection on the challenges that teachers face beyond the classroom. The lasting impact of this violent altercation will forever be a part of his story, one he wishes could be undone but, sadly, cannot.
