Government releases GH¢80 million to WAEC

The Majority Chief Whip informed Parliament that GH¢80 million had been released by the government to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The House was informed by Frank Annoh-Dompreh that the Ministry of Finance has given the council access to the funds as of today, June 21, 2024.

The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was clouded with uncertainty as the examining body, West African Examinations Council (WAEC), is still waiting to recover nearly 98% of the GH¢95.83 million it required to conduct the exam.

Only roughly GH¢2.3 million of the GH¢95.83 million needed to properly conduct the exam had been given to WAEC.

However, the council maintains that in order to carry out the examination and to analyze and disseminate the results, it would need at least 50% of the total money provided.

The exam is slated to start on Monday, July 8 and run through Monday, July 15, 2024, at all testing locations nationwide.

In an interview with Severious Kale-Dery of Graphic Online, John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, stated that although GH¢6 million had been processed through the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS), actual cash had not yet been converted.

Mr. Kapi voiced concerns that if the monies were not made available in a timely manner, the examination might not go ahead as planned. “A number of companies have generously provided products on credit, including bond paper for code printing, printing machine consumables, answer booklets, pencils, and other exam stationery.

“They will not provide any more materials for the upcoming exam, the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2024, due to our debt,” Mr. Kapi revealed.
