Ghana Prisons Service Engages Ejisu SHTS Students in Eye-Opening Educational Visit

Students of Ejisu Senior High Technical School (Ejisu SHTS) have received a powerful lesson on discipline and responsible living after officers from the Ghana Prisons Service visited the school to educate learners on the realities of prison life. The outreach, aimed at shaping positive behaviour among the youth, offered students a rare opportunity to understand the consequences of poor decision-making and the value of leading disciplined lives.

During the engagement, the prison officers delivered candid insights into what life behind bars truly entails. They explained that prisons are not just holding facilities, but environments filled with strict routines, limited freedoms, and challenging conditions that no young person should aspire to experience. Through real-life examples and detailed explanations, the officers highlighted the emotional, psychological, and physical hardships inmates face daily, especially young offenders who often struggle to adapt to the harsh environment.

The officers emphasised that many inmates end up in prison due to avoidable mistakes, peer pressure, and momentary lapses in judgment. They advised students to make informed choices, choose their friends wisely, and avoid behaviours that could put their future at risk. According to the team, discipline, respect for authority, and a commitment to personal growth remain the best safeguards against actions that could lead to incarceration.

The interactive session also allowed students to ask questions and gain clarity on issues surrounding juvenile offences, rehabilitation, and the role of the Ghana Prisons Service in reforming offenders. The officers noted that while rehabilitation remains a key goal, the harsh realities of prison life make prevention far better than cure.

School authorities commended the Ghana Prisons Service for the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. They expressed confidence that the session would inspire students to reflect deeply on their behaviour and choices as they navigate adolescence.

The visit forms part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s broader community outreach efforts to engage schools, create awareness, and help curb youth involvement in crime.
