GES Orders Sanctions After Stabbing and Alleged Rape at Inter-School Sports Competition

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned acts of violence and alleged sexual misconduct reported during the recently concluded Super Zonal Sports Competition held in the Eastern Region from February 4 to 6, 2026.

In an official statement released on February 11, 2026, GES management described the reported incidents as serious misconduct that has no place within the education system. The Service emphasized its commitment to discipline, safety, and student welfare across all school-related activities.

Details of Reported Incidents

According to preliminary reports, the incidents involved a stabbing and an alleged rape case connected to the sporting event.

GES indicated that a student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School was stabbed approximately 200 metres from the competition venue while he had stepped out to have lunch with a friend. The victim was reportedly attacked by students from New Juaben Senior High School.

The injured student received medical treatment and has since been discharged. One suspect has been arrested and is assisting police investigations.

In a separate incident, a female student from Osino Senior High School was allegedly sexually assaulted in a bush some distance from the competition grounds. Authorities have arrested two suspects who are currently in police custody, while a third suspect, believed to be the ringleader and an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School, is currently on the run.

GES confirmed that the victim received medical treatment and has been discharged from hospital. She is currently receiving counselling and psychosocial support from the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU).

GES Reaffirms Commitment to Student Safety

GES stressed that inter-school sports remain an important co-curricular activity aimed at nurturing talent, promoting discipline, teamwork, and unity among students. However, the Service noted that it is unacceptable for such events to be associated with violence, sexual abuse, or any form of criminal behaviour.

Management assured the public that all culprits will be taken through due process and sanctioned in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct where found guilty. The Regional Director of Education has also been directed to apply appropriate sanctions to any culpable schools to serve as a deterrent to others.

Call for Calm and Cooperation

GES has urged all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.

The statement was signed by Mr. Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service.
