GES Instructs Heads of SHS/HTS to Cease Vacation PLCs for Teachers
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a directive to all Regional Directors of Education, instructing them to stop requiring teachers in Senior High Schools (SHS) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTS) to attend Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) during their vacation periods. This decision, announced in a letter signed by Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, the Deputy Director-General (Q&A), aims to alleviate the burden on teachers and protect their well-deserved vacation time.
According to GES, the Management highly commends all SHS and SHTS staff for their dedication and commitment to the new reforms introduced in the senior high school system. However, concerns have been raised over teachers being required to attend PLC sessions, especially during transition periods in the academic calendar, infringing on their scheduled vacation time.
The letter emphasizes that PLCs are meant to support teacher development but should not impose on teachers’ rest periods. It instructs Regional Directors to ensure that heads of SHS and SHTS immediately halt the practice of requiring teachers to participate in PLCs during their vacations. Any sessions missed due to vacation are to be rescheduled and targeted for teachers after they return to school.
This directive reflects GES’s commitment to teacher welfare and ensuring that educators can rest and rejuvenate during their vacation, ultimately benefiting their performance and student outcomes when they return to work.
Background on PLCs
Professional Learning Communities are designed as collaborative sessions that allow teachers to engage in professional development, share best practices, and improve teaching methods. The goal of PLCs is to foster an environment where teachers can continuously improve and share strategies to benefit student learning. However, the GES has clarified that these sessions should not compromise teachers’ personal time, especially during designated vacation periods.

A Message of Support and Appreciation
The GES management, while acknowledging the success of the new reforms in senior high schools, reiterates its appreciation for the hard work of all SHS and SHTS staff in ensuring a smooth transition. The directive further reflects GES’s priority in maintaining a balance between teacher development and well-being.
As teachers prepare for their upcoming vacation, this decision by the GES is expected to provide them with the necessary rest and time to rejuvenate, which is essential for sustaining their motivation and productivity. This move signals a positive approach towards enhancing the work-life balance of teachers across the country.
Implications and Future Expectations
The directive suggests that GES is closely monitoring the demands placed on teachers and is responsive to the needs and feedback from the teaching community. The expectation is that this policy change will be well-received and that Regional Directors will comply with the directive to uphold teachers’ right to uninterrupted rest periods.
The GES letter underscores the importance of protecting teacher welfare and ensuring that professional development activities are scheduled within regular working periods, thereby promoting a supportive work environment within the education sector.
