GES Declares January 23, 2026 as National CPD Day; Learners to Stay Home

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially declared Friday, January 23, 2026, as a National Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Day for teachers across the country.

The directive, issued in a letter dated January 14, 2026, and signed by Munawaru Issahaque (PhD), Acting Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Assurance, underscores the Service’s commitment to strengthening teachers’ professional capacity.

According to the letter addressed to all Regional Directors of Education, the declaration is in recognition of the critical role Continuous Professional Development plays in improving teaching quality and learning outcomes nationwide.

The CPD Day is intended to provide teachers with dedicated time and institutional support to participate in Phase Two of the Cybersecurity and Data Protection Training being rolled out by the Service. The training seeks to build teachers’ capacity in managing sensitive data, particularly as digital tools become increasingly integrated into teaching, assessment, and school administration.

“In view of the above, January 23, 2026 is hereby declared a holiday for learners,” the statement noted, explaining that the move is to ensure uninterrupted participation of teachers in the training exercise.

GES management has consequently directed Regional, Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education, as well as Heads of Basic Schools and Second Cycle Institutions, to ensure strict adherence to the directive.

The letter further urged education authorities at all levels to disseminate the information promptly and cooperate fully to guarantee the success of the CPD programme.

The declaration means that no academic activities will take place for learners on January 23, while teachers are expected to fully participate in the national training exercise as part of efforts to promote professionalism, data security, and responsible digital practices within the education sector.
