Controversy Erupts at Nsutam Senior High Technical School Over Alleged Unilateral PTA Leadership Change

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) at Nsutam Senior High Technical School (NSUTECH) near Linda Dor, Eastern Region, is embroiled in controversy following allegations that the Headmistress, Madam Theresa Wiredu-Darkwa, has unilaterally selected a new set of PTA executives without consulting the current leadership or the broader parent body.
This move has sparked outrage among parents and incumbent PTA executives, who argue that leadership transitions within the PTA should follow a democratic process and reflect the collective will of all parents, rather than being imposed by the school administration.
The PTA’s Role and Achievements
The current PTA leadership has been instrumental in spearheading various initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of students and the school community. Under their stewardship, NSUTECH has made significant strides, including historic success in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), marking the first time in the school’s history that such a feat was achieved.
The PTA’s contributions to the school’s development include:
- Erecting a new school signpost
- Rewiring the Headmistress’ bungalow
- Installing 13 ceiling fans in classrooms
- Tiling the Assistant Administration office
- Funding a Super Mock exam to prepare students for WASSCE
- Constructing an open bathroom for female students
- Rewiring six classrooms for improved lighting and safety
- Installing a school siren
- Providing food items for the school’s feeding program
- Installing a 10,000-liter PolyTank for the girls’ dormitory
These efforts have undeniably enhanced the academic and living conditions for students, contributing to the remarkable WASSCE performance.
Allegations Against the Headmistress
Despite these achievements, controversy has arisen with the alleged actions of the Headmistress. Reports suggest that Madam Wiredu-Darkwa, seemingly driven by personal interests, has sidelined the current PTA executives and handpicked a new leadership team, consisting mainly of parents of second and third-year students. Critics argue that this move is an attempt to seize control over PTA funds and influence key decision-making processes within the school.
Further fueling the controversy, the Headmistress is said to have scheduled a general PTA meeting for March 1, 2025, to legitimize the imposition of the new executives. This has caused alarm among many parents and current PTA leaders, who view it as an effort to solidify an undemocratic process and undermine the PTA’s independence.

The PTA’s Call for Democracy and Transparency
Concerned parents and PTA members are insisting that any leadership transition must be conducted transparently through an election process. They argue that the current PTA executives, who have worked tirelessly for the betterment of the school, should oversee the transition, ensuring that all parents have a say in the selection of new leaders.
The PTA, as an independent body, is meant to advocate for students’ welfare, collaborate with school authorities, and ensure transparency in the school’s operations. By allegedly appointing new leaders without consulting the parents or the current executives, the Headmistress is seen as overstepping her role and undermining the PTA’s autonomy.
“We cannot allow this decision to stand. The PTA is a parent-driven body, and leadership changes must reflect the will of all parents, not just the administration,” said one concerned parent.
Emergency PTA Meeting Raises Alarm
In a further development, an emergency PTA meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:00 AM. However, this meeting has raised significant concerns, as it was called by the Headmistress without the approval or knowledge of the PTA Chairman and the current executives. This further deepens the suspicion that the Headmistress is attempting to consolidate control over PTA affairs.
The situation has created a rift between the school administration and parents, who feel their voices are being disregarded in the decision-making process. They are now calling on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to intervene and ensure that the PTA remains independent and that due process is followed in leadership transitions.
Looking Ahead
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are urging the Ghana Education Service and other relevant authorities to take swift action. The PTA’s autonomy must be preserved, and the process for selecting new leaders must be fair, transparent, and representative of the parent body.
For many, this controversy is a stark reminder of the delicate balance between school administration and parent governance. It underscores the importance of maintaining a transparent, democratic process in the selection of leaders, ensuring that the voice of every parent is heard and respected.
As the March 1 meeting approaches, all eyes will be on NSUTECH to see whether the PTA’s autonomy will be upheld, or if the current leadership will be sidelined in favor of a new, undemocratically selected executive. Only time will tell how this issue will ultimately be resolved.
