Classroom shed collapses on students in Sumborun, resulting in head injuries

A pupil from Sumborun Basic School in the Sissala East Municipality sustained a head injury after a log from their classroom shed fell on her when it collapsed.

Mr. Dangor File, the Assemblyman for the Sumboru electoral area, informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that construction on the school building, undertaken by the Northern Development Authority (NDA), has been stalled for the past four years.

He explained that students, aged between six and eight, helped reconstruct the classroom sheds to shield them from harsh weather, as their parents, preoccupied with farming, declined to assist in the regular repairs needed after each school vacation.

While gathering branches and leaves to reinforce the uncompleted structure, a log fell, injuring one pupil on the head and leaving others with minor injuries.

Checks by the GNA revealed that Zaachi Hanawu, the primary one pupil who was injured, has been treated and discharged from the community clinic.

Mr. Fataw Ayamga, a freelance photographer, has called on the Municipal Education Committee and other stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament, to visit the Sumborun community to assess the situation and determine possible solutions.

He also urged the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to take a more active role in supporting the school’s infrastructure development by providing temporary shelters until the government intervenes.

Mr. Fuseini Batong Yakubu, the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), confirmed that he had previously requested the Northern Development Authority’s assistance in completing some unfinished projects in the area, including the unroofed three-unit classroom block at Sumborun.

He mentioned that the unfinished projects scattered across the Municipality included a doctor’s bungalow and a maternity ward in Welembelle, the Banu Police post, a kindergarten block in Lilixia, a classroom block in Dangi, a three-unit classroom block in Dolunbizon, the Bujan maternity ward, the Kuroboi CHIPS compound, and the Challu community center.
