BECE 2024: How Results Will Be Calculated Under the New Curriculum

As Ghana’s education system undergoes reforms, the method for calculating the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results has also been updated for 2024. The introduction of the new curriculum brings with it a new grading system and calculation method to determine students’ aggregate scores.

This article outlines the key elements of this updated process and explains how students can calculate their results.

New Grading System

The new curriculum adopts a 4-point grading scale to assess student performance. The scale is as follows:

1-3 (Excellent)

4-6 (Good)

7-9 (Fair)

10-12 (Poor)

Core and Elective Subjects

The BECE candidates are required to take both core and elective subjects, which are crucial in determining their aggregate score.

(A) Core Subjects:

Every student must take the following four core subjects:

  1. English Language
  2. Mathematics
  3. Integrated Science
  4. Social Studies

(B) Elective Subjects:

Students are also required to choose two elective subjects out of the following:

  1. French
  2. Ghanaian Language and Culture
  3. Basic Design and Technology
  4. Home Economics
  5. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  6. Visual Arts
  7. Music
  8. Physical Education

Calculating the Aggregate Score

The BECE aggregate score is calculated by converting the students’ grades into point values based on the new grading scale.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Convert Grades to Points: Each grade corresponds to a point value, as follows:

Excellent (1-3): 1 point

Good (4-6): 2 points

Fair (7-9): 3 points

Poor (10-12): 4 points

  1. Add Points for Core Subjects: Sum the point values for the four core subjects.
  2. Add Points for Elective Subjects: Choose the best two scores from your four elective subjects and sum their point values.
  3. Total Your Points: Add the points from the core subjects (step 2) and the elective subjects (step 3) to get the final aggregate score.

Example of an Aggregate Calculation

Let’s look at an example of how a student’s aggregate score would be calculated:

Core Subjects:

English Language: Grade 2 (Good) = 2 points

Mathematics: Grade 5 (Good) = 2 points

Integrated Science: Grade 3 (Excellent) = 1 point

Social Studies: Grade 4 (Good) = 2 points

Total Core Points: 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 7 points

Elective Subjects:

French: Grade 6 (Good) = 2 points

Ghanaian Language and Culture: Grade 2 (Excellent) = 1 point

Total Elective Points: 2 + 1 = 3 points

Final Aggregate: 7 (core subjects) + 3 (elective subjects) = 10 points.

Conclusion

With this new system, students can better understand how their BECE results will be calculated under the new curriculum. The aim is to create a simpler, more transparent process that helps students gauge their performance in both core and elective subjects. A lower aggregate score is preferable, as it reflects better academic performance.
