Zongo Youth for Discipline Apprehends Truants, Promotes Student Decorum in Nima

A group of concerned community members operating under the name Zongo Youth for Discipline has taken commendable steps to combat indiscipline and truancy among students in the Nima enclave of Accra.
On Monday morning, the group apprehended a number of students from Accra High School who were spotted loitering around the community in improper school attire and running late for school. Rather than resorting to punishment or humiliation, the group advised the students to dress appropriately and accompanied them to school to ensure they reported for classes.
The Zongo Youth for Discipline initiative was born out of a growing concern among locals about the rising levels of indiscipline, absenteeism, and poor timekeeping among school-going youth in Nima and its surrounding areas. Comprised of volunteer youth, the group sees itself as a bridge between the community and educational stakeholders, aiming to foster a culture of responsibility, punctuality, and respect for school regulations among students.
“We’re not here to intimidate or punish,” said one of the group leaders. “Our goal is to help shape the future of our younger brothers and sisters. Many of us grew up in this same environment, and we know what happens when young people lose direction.”

Residents and parents in the community have widely praised the initiative, noting that it serves as a timely intervention in the face of increasing reports of student indiscipline in urban communities. They have also called on school authorities and local leaders to collaborate with the group to strengthen moral values and academic discipline among students.
As truancy and lax attitudes toward schooling continue to affect learning outcomes in many parts of Accra, grassroots initiatives like Zongo Youth for Discipline are being hailed as vital community-led efforts in supporting Ghana’s educational objectives.
The group has indicated plans to expand its campaign to other parts of Accra with significant Zongo populations, as part of a broader agenda to instil discipline and civic responsibility in the next generation.
