Teachers Face Public Backlash Over Responses to Parents’ ‘Our Day’ Appreciation Gifts
Some Ghanaian teachers have come under intense public criticism following their reactions to gifts presented to them by parents of their students, sparking widespread debate across social media and public forums.
The gifts, which reportedly ranged from foodstuffs such as rice, cooking oil and tubers to toiletries and other basic household items, were presented by parents as a gesture of appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and support to their children, particularly during the academic year.
However, reactions by some of the teachers captured in videos and posts circulating online have drawn sharp criticism from netizens. Many social media users expressed disappointment, accusing the teachers of being ungrateful and disrespectful to parents who may have offered the items within their limited means but with sincere intentions.
According to critics, appreciation should be measured by the thought behind the gesture rather than the monetary value of the items presented. Some netizens argued that the gifts reflected the economic realities of many Ghanaian parents and should therefore be received with humility and gratitude.

On the other hand, a section of the public has called for a more balanced discussion, urging critics to consider the broader context of teachers’ welfare in Ghana. They argue that the incident highlights the long-standing challenges teachers face, including low salaries, delayed promotions and limited incentives, which may influence their expectations and reactions.
Education analysts have also weighed in, cautioning that public shaming of teachers could further erode respect for the profession. They have called for clearer guidelines from educational authorities on gift-giving in schools to prevent misunderstandings and protect the professional relationship between teachers and parents.
As the debate continues, many stakeholders are urging both teachers and parents to exercise mutual respect and understanding, emphasizing that appreciation whether big or small should strengthen cooperation in the shared goal of providing quality education for Ghanaian children.
