Teacher commits suicide after reportedly losing $380 in Aviator

On Thursday, a secondary school teacher was discovered dead in what appears to have been a suicide.

Area Assistant Chief Johnson Manyara stated that the deceased, named as Kevin Omwenga, taught mathematics and chemistry at Nyamira Boys Secondary School in Nyamira, Kenya.

Colleagues disclosed to a Citizen Digital report that Omwenga, a frequent player of the Aviator betting game, was heavily indebted, having borrowed about Ksh50,000 ($380) from other teachers, most of which he was said to have lost while playing the game.

“I have gathered from his colleagues that he borrowed a lot of money but lost most of it playing the Aviator game,” said Manyara.

Nyamira Boys School principal George Onkundi noted that Omwenga was last seen near the school on Wednesday but did not report to work.

“He had not yet been employed by the TSC but had been teaching with us under BOM for the past four years. He didn’t show any signs of stress,” the principal stated.

When Omwenga’s phone stayed unanswered on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, there was cause for concern, and many teachers went to check on him at his house. The teachers knocked on the door a few times before noticing Omwenga’s body hanging outside a window. After then, the assistant chief of the area and police were called to the spot.

At the time of the occurrence, Omwenga’s wife and their one-year-old child were in the hamlet visiting his ailing mother. To Nyamira Referral Hospital, the body was transported.
