Teacher Arrested for Flogging 3-Year-Old Pupil at Emem Nursery and Primary School

A teacher at Emem Nursery and Primary School, Abakpa Nike, Enugu State, who allegedly flogged a 3-year-old pupil and left visible marks on her body, has been arrested by the police.
The arrest follows public outrage after the child’s mother raised alarm on social media, sharing disturbing photos showing multiple bruises on the little girl’s back and arms. The images sparked widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians calling for justice and stricter enforcement of child protection laws in schools.
According to reports, the teacher had allegedly beaten the child for failing to complete a classroom exercise. The excessive punishment reportedly left the young girl in severe pain, prompting her mother to confront school authorities before reporting the incident to law enforcement.
Confirming the arrest, sources close to the investigation stated that the teacher is currently in police custody and will face appropriate disciplinary and legal actions.

Child rights advocates have hailed the swift response of the authorities, emphasizing that corporal punishment of such magnitude has no place in modern education. They also urged the Enugu State Ministry of Education to intensify monitoring of private schools to prevent further incidents of child abuse under the guise of discipline.
The case has reignited national conversations about the safety of children in early learning institutions and the urgent need for teachers to adopt more humane disciplinary approaches in line with Nigeria’s Child Rights Act.
As investigations continue, parents and guardians are calling for justice for the 3-year-old victim and stronger safeguards to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for all children.
