SHS Student Commits Suicide After Boyfriend’s Arrest

A Senior High School student has died after allegedly taking her own life following the arrest of her boyfriend, according to reports from the school community.
The student, who lived in the school’s boarding house, had been given an exeat — permission to visit home — but is reported to have gone to see her alleged boyfriend instead. Her father later visited the school to check on her but was told by the housemistress that the student had signed for an exeat and left for home.
Angered by the turn of events, the father is reported to have gone to the boyfriend’s house and had the young man arrested. Community accounts say the student, distressed by her father’s actions, subsequently took her life. Local sources say she reportedly ingested a poisonous substance; authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of death.

School officials, the police and the family have been contacted for comment. At the time of writing, the police were reportedly conducting inquiries and the school administration had initiated an internal review. The housemistress who told the father the student had signed an exeat has not been named in official statements.
The incident has raised questions among residents and members of the school community about supervision, the exeat process for boarding students, and how conflicts between pupils and families are handled. Some community members expressed shock and sorrow and urged a thorough, transparent investigation.
Mental health experts and child welfare advocates stress the importance of early intervention, open communication and support for young people facing relationship or family pressures. They also urge schools to ensure clear procedures and timely communication with families to reduce misunderstandings that can escalate into crisis.
The matter remains under investigation.
