Renewal and Issuance of Teacher Licenses: GES Announces Key Updates

The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC), has announced the renewal and issuance of new licenses for professional teachers across the country.

This initiative stems from the NTC’s mandate under Section 60(d) of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023), which requires the registration and licensing of qualified teachers.

Background

The licensing of teachers commenced in 2021, with initial licenses issued for a validity period of three years. These licenses are now due for renewal, and the NTC is set to begin the process on Monday, 25th November 2024, starting in the Greater Accra Region. A detailed nationwide schedule will be released in due course.

Key Updates on the Teacher Licensing Process

Teachers are advised to take note of the following updates and requirements:

  1. Redesigned License Cards

The new license cards feature a redesigned layout, including additional information such as subject specialism and teacher category.

All teachers will receive the updated license cards, regardless of whether their current cards have expired.

  1. Verification Through QR Codes

The updated cards include a QR code for easy verification of a teacher’s registration status. Scanning the code will indicate whether the teacher is in good standing or their registration has expired.

  1. Conditions for Renewal

Teachers with expired licenses must fulfill all renewal conditions, including accumulating the required Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points.

  1. Professional Development

Teachers are strongly encouraged to participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and CPD programs to ensure they meet renewal requirements.

  1. Registration and License Validity

License cards will now be valid for five years.

Annual registration remains a fundamental requirement for professional status and expires on 31st December each year. Renewal of a license does not automatically renew registration.

Steps for Teachers

To facilitate the process, all teachers must:

Update Their Profiles
Visit the NTC portal (www.tpg.ntc.gov.gh) to update their profiles. Teachers may use the link (https://ntc.gov.gh/licence-update/) for guidance.

Meet CPD Requirements
Actively engage in CPD programs to accumulate the necessary points for annual registration renewal.

Implementation and Compliance

GES Management has directed all Regional Directors to disseminate this information to teachers through Metro, Municipal, and District Education Offices to ensure compliance.

Importance of Registration and Licensing

The professional status of every teacher hinges on both valid registration and licensing. Teachers are urged to treat this process with the utmost seriousness, as it underscores their professional identity and adherence to national education standards.

For further inquiries, teachers may contact their respective Regional or District Education Offices or refer to the NTC portal for more details.

This initiative reaffirms GES and NTC’s commitment to maintaining high standards in Ghana’s teaching profession.
