Over 37,000 Candidates Sit for Teacher Licensure Exam as Education Minister Assures Reforms

A total of 37,000 candidates across Ghana are participating in this year’s teacher licensure examination, which includes 32,000 first-time candidates and 5,000 resit candidates.
As part of efforts to boost morale and ensure fairness in the process, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, paid a working visit to the Accra Senior High School examination centre, where he interacted with some of the candidates sitting for the exam.
During his visit, Mr. Iddrisu encouraged the prospective teachers to give of their best and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to supporting aspiring educators through key policy reforms. He assured first-time candidates that those who do not pass the exam will be given another opportunity to resit, emphasizing inclusivity and fairness in the teacher qualification process.
The minister also reiterated his directive to the National Teaching Council (NTC) to open a final window for previous unsuccessful candidates to resit the examination before the August 30 deadline.

Highlighting government’s broader reform agenda, Mr. Iddrisu announced that the current teacher licensing regime will soon be replaced with a new qualification framework. This new system will shift focus from standardised testing to a more practical, skills-based approach—prioritising academic grounding, hands-on classroom experience, and continuous assessment.
“We are honouring our manifesto pledge. While we welcome suggestions from stakeholders, we will not compromise on quality,” the minister stated. “We are committed to improving the quality of teachers in Ghana.”
He also emphasized the importance of building a strong professional foundation for Ghanaian teachers, citing continuous professional development and routine assessments as critical to achieving higher teaching standards.
The Minister’s visit forms part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Education to ensure transparency, equity, and quality in the teacher qualification process. These reforms are aligned with the government’s long-term vision of raising educational standards and outcomes nationwide.
