Oda Community Health Nursing Training School Principal Decries Poor Quality of SHS Graduates

Dr. Jones Abeka, the Principal of Oda Community Health Nursing Training School (CHNTS), has raised concerns about the declining quality of Senior High School (SHS) graduates seeking admission into tertiary institutions.

Speaking on the issue, Dr. Abeka lamented that some prospective applicants to the CHNTS struggle with basic English proficiency, with some unable to spell simple words correctly despite having completed SHS.

This, he noted, is worrying, as it raises questions about the quality of education at the pre-tertiary level and its impact on higher education.

His concerns reflect a broader issue that has been raised by education stakeholders in Ghana regarding the preparedness of SHS graduates for tertiary studies. Many tertiary institutions have reported a decline in students’ academic preparedness, with some requiring remedial support to bridge fundamental gaps in literacy and numeracy.

Dr. Abeka’s statement also adds to the ongoing debate on the effectiveness of the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy and its implementation. While the policy has improved access to secondary education, some critics argue that the rapid expansion of enrollment may have compromised quality in some areas.

Education experts have long called for reforms to strengthen foundational learning in basic and secondary education to ensure that graduates possess the necessary skills to thrive in tertiary institutions and the job market.

Dr. Abeka’s concerns highlight the urgent need for stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), and other relevant bodies, to address gaps in quality to safeguard the future of education in Ghana.

As discussions on improving the education system continue, the Principal’s remarks serve as a wake-up call for policymakers, educators, and parents to collectively work toward enhancing the standard of education in the country.
