NUGS to Demonstrate Against WAEC Over Withheld and Canceled WASSCE 2024 Results

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has officially notified the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of its intention to stage a demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

This protest comes in response to WAEC’s decision to withhold and cancel the results of some candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The demonstration is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 9:00 AM, with participants assembling at Obra Spot, Circle, Accra.

In a statement signed by NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway, the student body strongly condemned WAEC’s actions, describing them as unfair and detrimental to affected students.

NUGS argued that withholding results has made many students ineligible for admission into public tertiary institutions, as all admission processes have already concluded.

Additionally, those whose results were canceled are unable to register for remedial exams, as WAEC had closed registration on January 7, 2025, before releasing the results.

NUGS views this situation as an abuse of discretionary power by WAEC and is calling for urgent intervention to ensure that all affected students are given a fair chance to continue their education.

“We call on all affected students, parents, concerned stakeholders, and students across the country to join us in this fight for justice,” the statement emphasized.

The planned demonstration highlights growing concerns over WAEC’s handling of examination results and its impact on students’ academic futures.

NUGS insists that the examination body must take immediate steps to resolve the issue and prevent future occurrences.
