Newly Posted Teachers to Picket GES, Education and Finance Ministries Over 10-Month Salary Arrears

Newly posted teachers from the 2024 cohort of Colleges of Education are set to stage a massive picketing exercise at key government institutions in Accra on Monday, June 23, 2025, over what they describe as an unbearable delay in salary payments and staff ID issuance.

The protest, scheduled to take place simultaneously at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Finance, is aimed at drawing urgent national attention to the plight of these young teachers who have gone 10 months without salaries or staff ID numbers.

In a strongly-worded poster circulating online, the aggrieved teachers lamented:

“Those we were posted together are enjoying their salaries, living better lives, and we are suffering!”

They accused the regional Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database (IPPD) officers of gross negligence, stating that their inaction has led to unnecessary financial and psychological hardship.

The teachers are demanding the immediate release of their staff ID numbers and full payment of their 10-month salary arrears. The poster includes bold slogans such as:

  • #ReleaseOurStaffIDsNow
  • #PayUsOurFull10MonthsArrears
  • #WeAreNotKids

The group has also declared their firm intention not to vacate the premises until their concerns are addressed, stating:

“You cannot force us to be at post without paying us! We are not leaving the premises with no positive outcome!”

The protest action highlights a deepening frustration among new entrants into the Ghana Education Service, many of whom have been working in various schools across the country without receiving a single paycheck. The situation, they argue, undermines their commitment and morale, especially as their colleagues posted in the same batch are already on payroll and enjoying full benefits.

This picketing follows months of unheeded complaints and is expected to attract significant attention from both the media and stakeholders in the education sector. As of now, there has been no official response from the GES, Ministry of Education, or Ministry of Finance.

The outcome of Monday’s demonstration may shape future actions by newly posted teachers if their demands remain unmet.
