Ministry of Education Probes Alleged BECE Placement Bribery Claims

The Ministry of Education has launched investigations into allegations of bribery in the Senior High School placement process following a viral social media post suggesting that entry into Aburi Girls’ Senior High School could cost as much as GH₵5,000.
The post, allegedly attributed to one Gertrude Adzo Boklo, claimed that the placement process under the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) was up for sale. However, the Ministry has dismissed the allegation, describing it as a false and conspiratorial narrative aimed at undermining the credibility of the system.
In a statement signed by Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry said it has taken the matter seriously and has begun immediate investigations. Attempts to trace the account behind the viral post have so far proven unsuccessful, as the account was deactivated shortly after publication.
The Ministry also noted that similar falsehoods are being circulated by anonymous or “ghost” accounts. To curb this, it is working in collaboration with the National Security, the Cyber Security Authority, and other agencies to track down those behind such activities.
“The Ministry of Education wishes to state categorically that the BECE Computerized School Placement System is entirely free of charge. At no point is payment required to access this service,” the statement stressed.
The Ministry has urged the public to report any instances of bribery or extortion related to school placements through its hotlines: 054 154 8223 (Calls) and 024 490 8957 (WhatsApp). It further assured the public that swift and decisive action will be taken against any individual, whether an official or third party, found culpable.
Dr. Apaak called on Ghanaians to work together to protect the integrity of the school placement exercise, saying: “Together, we can safeguard the transparency of Ghana’s school placement system and weed out unscrupulous people who seek to benefit unduly from this important national exercise.”
