Education Minister demands fair AI integration in the classroom

Ghana’s dedication to providing accessible, equitable, high-quality education has been reiterated by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu as the globe commemorates the International Day of Education 2025.
In a statement issued on Friday, January 24, the Minister emphasized the transformative power of education, particularly in the face of rapid technological advancements.
The theme for this year’s observance, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” draws attention to the growing intersection between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education. Iddrisu highlighted the potential of AI to revolutionize the learning landscape, but stressed that its benefits must be balanced with efforts to preserve the human element in education.
“Education is not just about reading, writing, and arithmetic,” Iddrisu said. “It is about equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to become better people and build a better society.”
As the world works towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Minister specifically referred to SDG 4, which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. Iddrisu reiterated that Ghana remains dedicated to this goal, recognizing that quality education is a critical factor in fostering social, economic, and technological progress.
In acknowledging the potential of AI, Iddrisu noted the advantages it offers in education, including personalized learning experiences and broader access to knowledge. He underscored, however, that fully realizing AI’s potential requires significant investments in educational infrastructure, reliable internet connectivity, and safe learning environments.
Drawing on the wisdom of historical figures such as Albert Einstein, George Washington Carver, and Malcolm Forbes, the Minister reminded the public of the enduring importance of education in shaping individuals and communities. Despite technological progress, Iddrisu pointed out that millions of children and adults around the world continue to face exclusion from education due to poverty, conflict, and inequality.
“Education must not be a privilege reserved for a select few,” he said. “It must be a fundamental right for all people, regardless of their circumstances.”
The Minister called for a unified approach from governments, educators, and global organizations to address these barriers and ensure equal opportunities for all learners, particularly in underserved regions. He emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration to dismantle the systemic challenges that prevent many from accessing quality education.
“As we mark International Day of Education 2025, may we all endeavour to ensure that education remains a beacon of hope and opportunity in our ever-changing world,” Iddrisu concluded.
With Ghana’s steadfast commitment to inclusive and equitable education, the Minister’s remarks serve as a timely reminder of the importance of education in driving sustainable development and the need for collective efforts to guarantee access for all.
As AI continues to reshape education worldwide, Ghana stands firm in its belief that education should always be a tool for empowerment, progress, and the enhancement of human potential.
