Local languages to be used in teaching mathematics in Ghana

In a move aimed at strengthening the use of Ghanaian languages as instructional tools in education, AyaPrep Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Commission on Culture (NCC) to promote the teaching and learning of various subjects particularly mathematics using local languages.

The partnership seeks to address long-standing language barriers that make mathematics difficult for many learners, especially those who struggle to understand English, the primary medium of instruction in most schools. According to the two institutions, the initiative is expected to improve students’ comprehension and overall performance in mathematics.

Speaking at the MoU signing, the Acting Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Wakefield Akwaku, said the collaboration aligns with the Commission’s mandate to protect and promote Ghana’s cultural heritage, particularly indigenous languages that are increasingly under threat.

“Our indigenous languages are increasingly under threat, and at the same time, many students struggle to understand mathematics because of the language used in teaching,” Mr. Akwaku stated.

He explained that teaching mathematics through local languages would enable learners to better grasp concepts and develop confidence in the subject.

“When students are taught in the language they think in, understanding becomes easier and learning outcomes improve,” he added.

Mr. Akwaku further disclosed that the NCC will provide technical expertise and leverage its nationwide network to support the programme, noting that the impact of the initiative will be assessed after one year.

On her part, the Research and Partnerships Manager of AyaPrep, Dr. Akua Campbell, said the company’s digital learning platform was specifically designed to bridge the gap between language and understanding in mathematics education.

“AyaPrep teaches mathematics in Ghanaian languages, allowing learners to access lessons in the language they understand best,” she explained.

Dr. Campbell revealed that the AyaPrep application currently supports Twi, Ga, Ewe, and Hausa, and has already recorded improved student performance, including better outcomes in national examinations.

Both AyaPrep and the National Commission on Culture expressed optimism that the partnership will significantly enhance educational outcomes while reinforcing the role of Ghanaian languages in knowledge creation and national development.
