Kumasi Youth Assault Man Over Viral Video Insulting Asantehene and Asanteman

Tensions flared in Kumasi after some youth arrested and brutally assaulted a young man who appeared in a viral video hurling insults at the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asante people.

In the said video, the man not only used derogatory language against the Asantehene but also made disparaging remarks about the directive issued from the Manhyia Palace, which restricted night movements in Kumasi during the burial rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.

The video, which quickly spread across social media, sparked widespread outrage among residents of Kumasi and beyond. Many considered the act as a direct affront to the dignity and authority of the Golden Stool and an insult to Asanteman’s cultural values.

Reports indicate that upon spotting the young man, some angry youth apprehended and subjected him to severe beatings before handing him over to the police. Videos circulating online show him battered and bruised, sparking mixed reactions from the public.

While a section of the public has condemned the insults as reckless and disrespectful, others have equally criticized the mob justice meted out to the suspect, calling for calm and adherence to the rule of law.

Police in Kumasi are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but the matter is expected to be investigated further to prevent escalation of tensions.

The Manhyia Palace directive on restricted night movements remains in force as preparations for the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa continue, with thousands of mourners expected to pay their last respects.
