Islamic SHS Student Dies After Falling From School Building in Suspected Suicide Incident

A tragic incident on the campus of Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi has left students, staff, and an entire community in shock after a Form Three student, identified only as Abass, died on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
Abass, a Business student who also served as the acting Boys’ Prefect, reportedly fell from the top floor of the school’s administration block during school hours. His fall drew the immediate attention of both students and staff, who rushed to the scene in an attempt to help.
According to sources within the school, preliminary information suggests that Abass may have been battling emotional distress and had allegedly been contemplating suicide for some time. However, school authorities were unaware of any such intentions, and no official report or complaint had been made prior to the incident.
Family members including his mother and uncle, told journalists that Abass had made comments hinting at self-harm in the past. Unfortunately, those around him assumed he was joking and did not treat the remarks with the seriousness they warranted. Some students also confirmed hearing similar statements from him early on.

The young prefect was urgently transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to save his life but pronounced him dead on arrival. His passing has left many struggling to comprehend the circumstances that led to the heartbreaking outcome.
When Citi News visited the school, authorities revealed that they had already informed the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES). However, the regional office has not yet issued an official statement.
In line with Islamic traditions, Abass has since been buried.
The incident has once again ignited conversations about the importance of mental health support in schools, especially for teenagers navigating academic pressure, leadership responsibilities, and personal challenges. Students and teachers are urging authorities to prioritize counseling services and early intervention systems to help identify and assist those silently battling emotional distress.
As the school community mourns, many are calling for a thorough investigation to better understand what may have contributed to the tragic loss of a promising young student.
