Huni Valley Senior High Appeals for Support Ahead of Golden Jubilee

As Huni Valley Senior High School (HUNIVASS) prepares to mark its 50th anniversary this November, authorities have made an urgent appeal for infrastructure support to improve teaching and learning conditions.

Speaking at the national launch of Hunivass @ 50 in Accra, the Headmaster, Mr. Daniel Aidoo, revealed that the school, with a student population of 1,711, faces severe accommodation and logistical challenges, particularly for female students.

“Out of the total enrollment, more than 1,205 are girls, which has led to overcrowding in the dormitories,” he disclosed. “We urgently need a new girls’ dormitory and at least 1,000 classroom furniture units as we prepare to transition to the single-track system.”

Mr. Aidoo explained that the school is among 99 institutions scheduled to revert to single-track this year. With 42 classrooms and an average of 50 students per class, HUNIVASS can admit about 2,000 students. However, this requires adequate furniture and support to ensure smooth implementation.

The President of the Huni Valley Old Students Association (HUNIVAS), Mr. Kofi Arhin, outlined initiatives being undertaken by alumni to uplift the school as part of the anniversary celebrations. These include cleaning exercises, fun games between teachers and old students, and development projects.

“One major project, the construction of a fence wall, is beyond our capacity to undertake alone. We are therefore appealing to old students, individuals, and corporate bodies for support,” Mr. Arhin said.

Prominent old student, Dr. Tony Aubynn, described the anniversary theme, “50 Years of Secondary School Education: The Role of Stakeholders,” as timely and relevant. He urged stakeholders to reflect on the role they can play in uplifting rural schools like HUNIVASS.

“Despite its remote location and limited resources, this school has made a huge contribution to secondary education. Government and education stakeholders must support rural schools, not by lowering standards, but by improving infrastructure and creating better conditions for teachers,” Dr. Aubynn emphasized. He further called for deliberate action to close the gap between well-resourced “Ivy League” schools and less-endowed institutions.

The launch ceremony also featured the unveiling of the anniversary logo, polo shirts, and commemorative cloth, alongside the kickoff of a fundraising campaign to support ongoing development projects.

Established in November 1975 to serve Huni Valley and neighboring communities in the Prestea/Huni Valley District of the Western Region, the school has grown into a vital educational institution. The Golden Jubilee celebrations are scheduled to take place from November 24 to 30, 2025, underlining five decades of academic service and community impact.
