Government Targets 20,000 Girls for Coding and Robotics Training in 2026

The Government of Ghana is set to train 20,000 girls in coding and robotics across all 16 regions in 2026, according to Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson. The initiative, an expansion of the ongoing Girls in ICT Programme, was announced during the presentation of the national budget to Parliament on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

Mr. Forson explained that the expanded training package aims to provide more young women with hands-on experience in digital skills, problem-solving, and technological innovation. He noted that the programme, which began earlier this year, has already made significant strides in equipping girls with foundational knowledge in ICT and preparing them for careers in the fast-growing tech industry.

“The 2026 target is to reach 20,000 girls across all 16 regions,” the Finance Minister stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to bridging the gender gap in the technology sector.

He added that the Girls in ICT initiative has proven successful in helping beneficiaries gain confidence in technology-related fields, opening pathways to future opportunities in robotics, software development, and digital entrepreneurship.

Mr. Forson assured the House that the government is fully committed to scaling up the programme, which he described as a vital investment in Ghana’s future workforce.

“The Girls in ICT will empower thousands more girls, promoting gender equality and fostering future leaders in Ghana’s tech sector,” he affirmed.

The expanded programme is expected to create a stronger pipeline of female tech talent, strengthen Ghana’s digital transformation efforts, and support the global push for increased female participation in STEM fields.
