Ghana’s March AFCON qualifiers will be Chris Hughton’s debut game in that role

Chris Hughton, the newly appointed head coach of the Black Stars, would face his first test the following month after being officially accepted by the Ghana Football Association.

The Ghana FA formally confirmed the appointment of the former Newcastle United manager as the head coach of the Ghanaian national team on Sunday night.

The 64-year-old succeeds Otto Addo, who stepped down from the position following Ghana’s group-stage elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars’ technical advisor during their World Cup run was the seasoned strategist.

When the Black Stars take on Angola in a doubleheader in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches in Cape Coast and Luanda, respectively, Hughton will be in charge of the team for the first time.

From October 2020 to September 2021, Hughton worked with English Championship team Nottingham Forest. He has also worked with teams including Brighton & Hove Albion, Norwich City, and Birmingham City.

Between January 2003 and October 2025, the former Irish footballer served as Ireland’s assistant manager. From July 2001 to October 2007, he served as Tottenham Hotspur’s assistant manager.

He was born in Britain and has Ghanaian ancestry.
