Ghana to Send Teachers to Burkina Faso, Receive French Tutors Under New Education Pact

The Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana, H.E. David Kabré, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the education sector between the two neighbouring countries.

The high-level engagement focused on expanding access to Ghana’s public tertiary institutions for Burkinabè students and improving the teaching and learning of the English language in Burkina Faso. Both parties agreed that enhanced educational collaboration would promote regional integration, academic mobility, and cultural exchange within the sub-region.

Among the key proposals discussed was a plan to open Ghana’s public universities and colleges to high school graduates from Burkina Faso at capped and affordable fees. The initiative is intended to make tertiary education in Ghana more accessible to Burkinabè students while fostering cross-border academic opportunities.

In response, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu reaffirmed the Government of Ghana’s commitment to deepening educational cooperation with Burkina Faso. He announced plans for a Labour Exchange Programme that would facilitate the exchange of teachers between the two countries.

Under the proposed arrangement, Ghanaian teachers would be deployed to Burkina Faso to teach English, while Burkinabè teachers would be posted to Ghana to teach French. According to the Minister, the initiative is expected to improve language proficiency in both countries while promoting cultural understanding and professional development among educators.

Mr Iddrisu noted that beyond language acquisition, the exchange programme would strengthen people-to-people relations and prepare students in both countries to better compete in an increasingly interconnected global environment.

The meeting marks a significant step towards closer educational ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso, underscoring the shared commitment of both countries to using education as a tool for regional cooperation and sustainable development.
