GES Takes 99 Double-Track Schools Off the System; Increases Free SHS Budget

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that 99 Senior High Schools previously operating under the double-track system have now been restored to the traditional single-track arrangement.

In a press release signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, GES stated that the government has increased budgetary allocations for Free Senior High School (SHS), with a dedicated source of funding to ensure sustainability.

According to the statement, the government has so far paid GH¢1 billion into the Free SHS programme and cleared all capitation grant arrears amounting to GH¢72.8 million. Additionally, GH¢2.9 billion has been released to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), while GH¢122.8 million was paid to cover the registration of candidates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The release further indicated that the School Feeding Programme budget per child had been increased, with GH¢895 million disbursed to cater for meals in basic schools.

On governance and discipline, the statement revealed that Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) have been reactivated to strengthen school administration and promote accountability.

It added that the government had also settled expenses for this year’s WASSCE practicals as well as the feeding grant for special needs schools.

The GES underscored that these interventions reflect the government’s commitment to sustaining quality education and ensuring equity at all levels of the educational system.
