GES Release Harmonised Prospectus for BECE Graduates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the release of a harmonized prospectus for all Senior High and Technical Schools in the country, known as the “National Prospectus.” This new initiative, aimed at standardizing the entry requirements for first-year students, outlines uniform guidelines for essential items students are required to bring.

With this development, schools are expected to strictly adhere to the prospectus without imposing any additional items. As a result, parents no longer need to wait for the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) results to begin preparing for their children’s enrollment.

The National Prospectus has been categorized into three sections, which have been designed to simplify the shopping process for parents. These sections are further divided into basic needs and cleaning materials.

Categories of the Prospectus

Category A includes 27 essential items such as a hard body suitcase or trunk, chop box or hard plastic container, toiletries, bedding, footwear (specific to the school), underwear, cutlery, and educational tools such as a mathematical set and scientific calculator.

Category B focuses on cleaning materials, divided into three groups:

  1. Students in the first group are required to bring a pair of hard hand gloves, 5 liters of liquid soap, and 1 kg of washing powder.
  2. Group two requires students to bring small-sized bleach, a dustpan, a long-handled broom, and a scrubbing brush.
  3. Group three mandates items such as a standing mop and bucket, a duster, and a short local broom.

Day Students’ Requirements

For day students, Category A essentials include a mathematical set, scientific calculator, school-specific sandals without embellishments, black or white sneakers, and a school bag. Cleaning materials are categorized the same way as for boarding students.

Rationale for the Grouping

GES Director-General, Dr. Eric Nkansah, emphasized that this grouping approach for cleaning materials is based on prior experiences. Students will be classified into different groups to ensure the cleaning materials are evenly distributed, preventing parents from having to purchase a long list of such items.

Parents are encouraged to buy all Category A items while waiting for the categorization of students in schools. Dr. Nkansah reassured parents that the Computerised School Selection and Placement results would be released soon and promised a smooth placement process.

“The harmonized prospectus eliminates unnecessary items that schools previously included, ensuring timely enrollment for students,” Dr. Nkansah added. He assured parents that all qualified candidates would be placed in schools as there were sufficient vacancies available.

Message to Heads of Schools

The Director-General reminded heads of schools that the new prospectus replaces any school-specific lists. He urged school administrators to direct any concerns or challenges to their district or regional directors.

Furthermore, Dr. Nkansah warned that any individuals found soliciting money for placements would face legal consequences, stressing that the admission process is free.

This new system aims to streamline the admissions process for all incoming students and alleviate some of the financial burdens previously faced by parents. With the GES ready to assist with any placement-related challenges, Dr. Nkansah expressed confidence in a successful admission period this year.
