GES Orders Recall of Over 30 Suspended Students at Sawla SHS

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the management of Sawla Senior High School in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region to immediately recall over 30 students who were placed on indefinite suspension.

This directive follows a sharp U-turn by GES after it emerged that the school lacked the authority to impose such a severe punishment without approval from higher authorities.

Suspension Without Approval

Speaking to JoyNews, the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, clarified that the school had acted beyond its mandate in suspending the students. He emphasized that the headmaster and his assistant only informed the district education office after the students had already been sent home.

“Yes, they [students] had left the school before the headmaster and his assistant came to me and told me about the suspension. So, I told him to recall the students because he has no authority to suspend them,” Mr. Yeboah stated.

He further assured that he would visit the school on Wednesday to engage with management and ensure that all affected students return to continue their academic work.

Reason for the Suspension

The students were reportedly suspended following an investigation by a seven-member committee, which examined allegations of immoral behavior and possession of mobile phones on campus.

However, the school administration’s decision to impose indefinite suspensions without consulting the district or regional GES directorates—and without notifying the students’ parents—has drawn widespread criticism.

Public Scrutiny and GES Intervention

The decision to recall the students came after Myjoyonline broke the news of the indefinite suspension, leading to increased scrutiny of the school’s handling of disciplinary actions. Following the media reports, GES swiftly intervened, stressing that proper procedures must be followed in dealing with student misconduct.

GES has assured the public that it will closely monitor the situation to ensure compliance with its regulations and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

This development raises questions about disciplinary measures in schools and highlights the importance of adherence to established guidelines in handling student-related issues.

  1. Yes the school administration erred but embarrassing the head or leaders of the school will lead to the culture of silence when indisciplinary situation occurs.

No doubt students keep attacking teachers and even stabbing each other in schools.
