GES Issues New Guidelines for Parent-Teacher Associations in Senior High Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the approval of standardized guidelines for the operation and management of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across all Senior High Schools in the country.

In a circular dated 29th September 2025, signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Director of Schools and Instructions Division on behalf of the Acting Director-General, the GES explained that the guidelines are intended to streamline PTA functions and align them with national education policies.

Purpose of the Guidelines

According to the directive, the new PTA guidelines seek to:

  • Streamline PTA functions to conform with national education policies.
  • Promote transparency and accountability in the use of PTA funds.
  • Strengthen collaboration between parents, teachers, and school management in delivering quality education.
  • Ensure uniformity in the structure and operations of PTAs across all Senior High Schools.

Implementation and Monitoring

The GES has directed all Regional Directors of Education to notify Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education, who in turn are to inform Senior High Schools within their jurisdiction to ensure strict compliance. Schools are also required to submit quarterly reports on PTA activities using the reporting format provided by the Service.

The circular emphasized the need for full cooperation from all stakeholders to enhance effective school-community partnerships and improve teaching and learning outcomes.

The GES further urged that the directive be treated with the “urgency and seriousness it deserves.”

Copies of the circular have also been sent to the Chairman of the GES Council and senior officials at the Service’s headquarters in Accra.
