GES Introduces New Literature Text for BECE English Paper (2027–2031)

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the introduction of a new literature text for the English Language paper of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), effective from 2027 to 2031.

In a circular dated April 7, 2025, and signed by Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, the Service explained that the change has been necessitated by the introduction of the Standard-Based Curriculum in Junior High Schools (JHS).

The new book, titled The Beacon of Light and published by Excellence and Elco Publications, has been assessed, approved, and recommended by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA). According to NaCCA, the text aligns strongly with the Standard-Based Curriculum and Ghanaian values, making it a suitable resource for both teaching and learning at the JHS level.

This decision brings an end to the use of The Cock Crow, which has served as the core literature text for over a decade. The Service noted that the prolonged use of the book has compelled examiners to recycle test items, while some aspects of its content have become outdated in relation to the requirements of the new curriculum.

Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to communicate the directive to all Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education for onward dissemination to heads of JHS, teachers, and learners. This is to ensure that schools make the necessary arrangements to transition smoothly to the new text ahead of its official use in the 2027 BECE.

The new initiative is part of ongoing reforms in Ghana’s education sector aimed at modernizing teaching and learning materials to better reflect national values and the evolving needs of students.
