CEO of National Abacus Competition Urges Government to Introduce Abacus Lessons in Public Schools

The Chief Executive Officer of the World Brainest National Abacus Competition, Hilda Karroum, has made a passionate appeal to the Government of Ghana to support the integration of abacus lessons into the public school curriculum.

Speaking at the 2025 edition of the National Abacus Competition held at the Achimota PTA Secretariat in Accra on Saturday, July 12, Ms. Karroum emphasized the transformative power of abacus training in developing children’s cognitive and mathematical skills.

According to her, incorporating the abacus program in public schools nationwide will equip pupils with the ability to perform calculations with remarkable speed and accuracy, giving them a solid foundation in arithmetic and enhancing their overall academic performance.

“In fact, the future of Ghana lies in the hands of the Ghanaian children because they’re the future generation,” Ms. Karroum stated. “If the government supports us, we will all move forward and together, Ghana will reach where it wants to be.”

She noted that the abacus initiative is already benefiting students in some private schools, but without government intervention, children in public schools risk being left behind.

“Government should sponsor us so that it won’t be in a way such that only private schools will have the privilege to learn this program,” she said. “But all government schools across the country will also get the opportunity to partake in this educational exercise.”

Ms. Karroum believes that the introduction of the abacus program in public schools will be a step forward in building a generation of analytical thinkers and problem solvers — a critical need for national development.

The National Abacus Competition, which brings together young math enthusiasts from schools across the country, continues to grow in popularity as it showcases the mental agility and skill of participating pupils. The event also serves as a platform to promote innovative learning tools that foster critical thinking and academic excellence.
