Bolgatanga Technical Institute Orders Students to Pay GH¢1,000 After Violent Campus Riot

The Bolgatanga Technical Institute (Bolgatang Tech) has directed all second- and third-year students to return to campus immediately following recent violent disturbances that resulted in significant damage to school property.
According to school authorities, every male student is required to pay a GH¢1,000 damage fee before being granted access back onto the campus. Management says the fee is part of efforts to recover the cost of destroyed property and to reinforce discipline among the student body.
The decision follows a destructive student riot that occurred between Thursday, August 14, 2025, and Friday, August 15, 2025, during which parts of the school were set ablaze. Key facilities affected include the senior headmaster’s office and the school library, both of which suffered extensive damage.

Management Justifies Damage Fee
Authorities at the school say the GH¢1,000 charge is necessary after an assessment revealed large-scale destruction linked to the unrest. The payment, they explained, will help fund immediate repairs and restore a conducive learning environment.

Management further emphasized that additional disciplinary measures will soon be rolled out to maintain order on campus and prevent future disturbances. The school insists that without strict enforcement, academic activities cannot resume smoothly.

Background to the Riot
The August disturbances mark one of the most destructive student riots recorded at the institution in recent years. Though the specific cause of the unrest is yet to be publicly disclosed, eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports indicate tensions had been building among some sections of the student population prior to the incident.
Security officers and school authorities reportedly struggled to contain the situation as the rioters vandalized property and set parts of the school on fire.
What Happens Next
Students who comply with the directive and pay the GH¢1,000 fee will be allowed back on campus as academic work is expected to resume shortly. Management also hinted at consultations with stakeholders, including parents, security agencies, and the Ghana Education Service, to establish long-term measures to prevent similar occurrences.
