AMA Distributes 1,500 Dual Desks to Schools Across Accra Metropolis

In a bid to enhance the learning environment in Accra’s basic schools, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has donated 1,500 dual desks to selected schools across the metropolis.

This donation, part of an annual initiative by the assembly, seeks to improve the educational infrastructure and ensure students have the necessary tools to focus on their studies.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Sackey, emphasized the importance of providing comfortable seating for students, stating that the desks would support students’ ability to concentrate and retain information.

“We undertake this activity every year to support the education system, ensuring that students have access to desks to sit behind and write their notes comfortably,” Mayor Sackey said.

The desks will be distributed among three schools across the three educational districts in the Accra metropolis. The Mayor also stressed the need for a maintenance culture in schools, calling on students to take good care of the desks to ensure their longevity. She urged Circuit Supervisors (CISOs) and teachers to emphasize the importance of proper upkeep.

“It is essential to teach the children how to maintain these desks, as this will instill a sense of responsibility in them. I have engaged the Circuit Supervisors through the Metro Education Director to ensure they emphasise the need for proper maintenance,” she added.

Addressing the students directly, Mayor Sackey advised them to use the desks responsibly, cautioning against standing on them and stressing that they were responsible for the proper care of the resources provided.

Beyond the distribution of desks, Mayor Sackey reaffirmed her commitment to educational development within the metropolis, referencing recent town hall meetings where the AMA announced new school construction projects.

She assured the public that more developments would follow and called on educational stakeholders, particularly the CISOs, to provide the necessary information to ensure timely interventions.

The Accra Metro Education Director, Mrs. Justine Ivy Apawu, who received the desks on behalf of the schools, praised the AMA for its consistent support. She highlighted that the increasing student enrolment in basic schools necessitated more resources each year, making the assembly’s efforts invaluable.

“Last year, they gave us a significant number of desks, and this year, they have increased the support due to rising student admissions,” Mrs. Apawu said.

She further explained that the additional desks would enable students to sit more comfortably during lessons and exams, thus promoting focus and reducing instances of academic dishonesty.

Mrs. Apawu also noted past instances where the AMA had provided logistical support, such as transportation during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) period, further demonstrating their commitment to the education sector.

The AMA’s efforts are expected to alleviate some of the challenges schools in the metropolis face as they continue to accommodate rising student populations while working toward improving learning conditions for all.
