The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the 2024/2025 academic calendar for all second cycle institutions across the country. This important directive, dated October 16, 2024, outlines key dates and schedules for both new and continuing students.
Key Details of the Calendar
- Start of the Academic Year: The academic year is set to begin on Wednesday, October 30, 2024. This applies to all students, including those in Single Track and Transitional schools.
- Promotion of Transitional Calendar Students: Current first-year students in Transitional Calendar schools will conclude their 2023/2024 academic year on Monday, October 28, 2024, and will be promoted to Form 2. These students will seamlessly transition into the new academic year without a break.
- Incoming First-Year Students: New students entering Form 1 in both Single Track and Transitional schools will commence their academic journey on October 30, 2024.
- Reopening of Continuing Students: All continuing students in Single Track schools are also expected to return to school on October 30, 2024, marking the beginning of the 2024/2025 academic year.
- Objective of the Calendar: GES aims to restore the school calendar to its traditional September start date in the coming years. Additionally, this schedule ensures that students will sit for the 2024/2025 WASSCE in May/June 2025.
2024/2025 Academic Schedules
The calendar is divided into various tracks for different student levels and forms:
Form 1, Form 2, and Form 3 students: Each form has specific dates for being in school and for taking breaks. The calendar is designed to ensure efficient learning time and proper planning for academic activities.

Breaks and Holidays:
There is a scheduled break for eligible voters from December 5 to 9, 2024.
The Christmas break will run from December 20, 2024, to January 2, 2025.
The GES expects strict adherence to this academic calendar, and all regional directors are directed to communicate the details to the heads of second cycle institutions for full implementation.
Impact of the Calendar Adjustment
The new calendar represents an important step towards stabilizing the academic schedule, which had been affected in recent years by external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic. By adjusting the calendar, the GES ensures that students have ample time for both academic learning and national examinations, particularly the WASSCE and BECE.
Conclusion
The GES remains committed to providing a stable and effective academic environment for second cycle institutions. This new calendar not only restores structure but also aligns the education system with future WASSCE and BECE schedules. Regional education directors and heads of schools are tasked with ensuring smooth execution of the calendar, starting from October 30, 2024.
For any further clarifications, the GES has made provisions for continuous communication with all stakeholders involved.
