WhatsApp to End Support for Older Android and iPhone Models in 2025

WhatsApp will no longer function on some devices starting January 1, 2025. The messaging giant, owned by Meta, is updating its compatibility requirements to ensure the app remains secure and functional on newer devices.

This update means WhatsApp will stop supporting Android KitKat and earlier operating systems, as well as iOS versions below 15.1 later in the year. For users who have managed to keep their phones in working condition for over a decade, this could spell the end of their WhatsApp experience unless they upgrade their devices.

Android Devices Affected from January 1, 2025

Several older Android models will lose WhatsApp compatibility due to their inability to update beyond Android KitKat. The list includes:

Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini

Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014

HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601

LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90

Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Users with these devices may attempt software updates or DIY modifications, but such efforts come with risks like voiding warranties or rendering the phone unusable.

iPhone Models to Lose Support from May 5, 2025

The compatibility update extends to iPhones in May 2025. From this date, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.1 or later. Unfortunately, some older iPhones, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, cannot update beyond iOS 12.5.7, leaving users with no choice but to upgrade their devices.

Implications for WhatsApp Users

This change affects both the standard WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business. While the number of users impacted is relatively small, these updates are part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to enhance security and performance for newer smartphones.

Meta encourages affected users to upgrade to newer devices to continue enjoying WhatsApp’s features. The move highlights the need to balance technology’s rapid evolution with the lifespan of older devices.

As 2025 approaches, users are advised to check their phone’s compatibility to avoid disruptions. The full list of supported operating systems is available on WhatsApp’s official website.
