WAEC Cracks Down on Examination Malpractices in 2024 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken decisive steps to address examination malpractices detected during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a bold move to uphold examination integrity, WAEC has announced the cancellation and withholding of results for thousands of candidates involved in irregularities.
In a press release shared with 3News.com, WAEC detailed the actions taken following its investigations:
Cancellation of Results
Subject Results Cancelled: A total of 4,108 candidates had their subject results cancelled for smuggling foreign materials—such as prepared notes, textbooks, and printed documents—into examination halls.
Entire Results Cancelled: WAEC annulled the entire results of 483 candidates found with mobile phones in the examination halls, a direct violation of its strict regulations.
Withholding of Results
WAEC has also withheld the results of candidates pending further investigations:
Subject Results Withheld: Results of 781 candidates are being scrutinized for suspected offences.

WAEC’s Commitment to Examination Integrity
These actions highlight WAEC’s dedication to maintaining the credibility of its examinations. In the press release, John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, reiterated the council’s zero-tolerance stance on examination malpractices.
He urged candidates and schools to uphold ethical standards and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their support during the examination process.
WAEC’s measures serve as a stern reminder of its commitment to ensuring fair and credible assessments, reinforcing the importance of integrity in education.
