WAEC Arrest 10 Including Supervisor and fashion designer Over BECE Malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the arrest of ten individuals for allegedly breaching examination regulations during the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday, 12 June, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mr. John Kapi, disclosed that those arrested include one examination supervisor, six invigilators, a school administrator, and two civilians — a fashion designer and a student nurse.

According to Mr. Kapi, the suspects were caught in possession of mobile phones and had taken snapshots of examination papers, which they circulated on social media platforms. “These persons were not related to the exams, and it is criminal for them to have any form of the question paper outside the exam hall,” he emphasized.

WAEC further revealed that some of the suspects were found with solved questions and photocopied materials intended for distribution to candidates. The arrests were made in five regions: one suspect from Greater Accra, one from Ashanti, five from Bono East, and two from the Bono Region.

In a related incident, a number of BECE candidates were found in possession of photocopied materials. Mr. Kapi stated that WAEC has taken statements from the students involved, and investigations are ongoing. “If it is found that indeed they took advantage of the material, we would cancel their papers,” he warned.

WAEC says it is collaborating with security agencies nationwide to ensure the integrity of the examination process is upheld. This year, more than 600,000 candidates are sitting for the BECE across the country.
