UNN Sacks Lecturer After New Video with Female Student Surfaces Online
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has dismissed a senior lecturer, Professor Abraham Chinedu, following the emergence of a disturbing video allegedly showing him in a compromising situation with a female student. The decision comes after an internal investigation confirmed acts of gross misconduct and abuse of professional ethics.
Professor Chinedu, who taught Statistics, had long been the subject of multiple complaints from students accusing him of soliciting sexual favours in exchange for higher grades — allegations he had consistently denied over the years. However, the recent video, which has gone viral on social media, appeared to substantiate earlier claims and reignited public outrage over the issue of sexual harassment in higher education.
According to campus sources, the first video was obtained through a student-organized sting operation aimed at exposing the lecturer’s alleged unethical behaviour. The footage reportedly captures Professor Chinedu attempting to persuade a female student to engage in inappropriate activity, allegedly promising academic assistance in return. The visibly uncomfortable student is seen rejecting his repeated advances.
In response to the scandal, UNN’s management convened an emergency disciplinary committee to investigate the matter. Following a review of the evidence, including the viral video and testimonies from students, the university’s governing council resolved to terminate Professor Chinedu’s appointment with immediate effect.

A senior university official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the decision: “The university upholds strict standards of integrity and professionalism. Such behaviour violates our core values and cannot be tolerated. The lecturer has been dismissed in accordance with due process.”
The development has sparked widespread reactions across social media and within the academic community. Many have commended UNN for taking decisive action, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. Others have urged universities nationwide to strengthen mechanisms for reporting and addressing sexual harassment cases, which often go unpunished due to fear of victimization.
The incident has also renewed discussions about power dynamics and accountability in academia, with calls for the implementation of more robust policies to protect students, particularly women, from exploitation.
While the university is expected to release an official statement soon, the dismissal of Professor Chinedu sends a strong message that abuse of authority and sexual misconduct will not be tolerated in the country’s higher education system. The case, observers say, should serve as a wake-up call for other institutions to enforce ethics and safeguard student welfare.
