TEWU Threatens Industrial Action Over Delayed Implementation of Conditions of Service

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC-Ghana has expressed grave dissatisfaction with the prolonged delay in implementing revised Conditions of Service for its members across various educational institutions and agencies.

TEWU members, whose roles are crucial in the education sector, have been waiting for over four years for the finalization and implementation of their improved Conditions of Service.

In a press release issued on November 14, 2024, the union highlighted its concerns regarding the lack of progress in concluding and signing the Conditions of Service for staff in the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority, Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.

Despite years of negotiations and reviews, no substantive action has been taken, leaving union members frustrated and working under uncertain terms.

TEWU emphasized that the issue, which has lingered for years, continues to negatively impact its members. According to the union, these documents should have been implemented long ago, but instead, government agencies have engaged in protracted back-and-forth deliberations without resolving the matter.

As the 2024/2025 academic year begins, TEWU raised concerns about the challenges their members face, especially as the admission process for first-year students is underway. The union stressed that members cannot continue to work under these uncertain conditions.

The union has issued an ultimatum, warning that if immediate action is not taken to resolve the matter, they will be left with no option but to embark on an indefinite industrial action starting Monday, November 18, 2024. TEWU has called on stakeholders to address the issue promptly to prevent disruptions in the education sector.

King James Azortibah, General Secretary of TEWU, reiterated that the patience of members is running out. The union hopes that stakeholders will take swift and amicable steps to implement the Conditions of Service, averting the looming strike.

TEWU’s demand for immediate action serves as a reminder of the critical role non-teaching staff play in ensuring the smooth functioning of educational institutions. Failure to address their concerns could lead to significant disruptions, affecting students, staff, and the entire educational system.
