Teacher bets GHC15k intended for his father’s medical expenses

Joshua Adu Guni, a teacher from Kasoa, is desperately seeking assistance after spending the money designated for his father’s hospital bills on sports betting.

Despite numerous warnings about the addictive nature of sports betting, some people still disregard the advice and continue to place bets, even with their last bit of money.

Joshua explains that he was introduced to sports betting by a friend in 2019 and became hooked in 2020 after his friend won a bet and shared some of the winnings with him.

Joshua recounts that the trouble began when his uncle gave him plumbing materials to sell, and he earned Ghc7,000 from the sale. He went to his uncle’s house to hand over the money but found out that his uncle was out of town.

Three days later, Joshua started using the money to place bets in hopes of making more, but by the time he realized what was happening, he had already lost all the money.

He further revealed that, in addition to this, he also owes his mother Ghc5,000 because of betting, and now the money that was supposed to cover his father’s hospital bills has also been squandered on gambling.

Sharing his story, he said, “I began betting in 2019, but my addiction intensified in 2020 when a friend introduced me to roulette at a casino,” as reported by Onua Online.

“He didn’t exactly teach me, but he used my phone to place bets and gave me some of the winnings, which sparked my interest.”

Joshua continued, “My uncle asked me to sell his plumbing materials, and after selling them, I had GH¢7,000. I tried to give him the money, but he wasn’t around. Three days later, I started using the money to gamble, and before I knew it, it was all gone.”

He concluded, “I would be very grateful if someone could help me. If there’s a rehab and someone is willing to take me there, I am fully committed. Even if it’s right now, I am ready to stop.”
