Tanyigbe Traditional Area Hosts Groundbreaking 2024 Quiz Competition: A New Era for Youth Development Through Innovation and Technology

The 2024 edition of the Norvisi Development Union’s (NorDU) annual festival has marked a significant turning point in the history of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, with the introduction of a groundbreaking quiz competition focused on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mathematics, and Science. The competition, which took place in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region, was a celebration of unity, education, and forward-thinking leadership. It drew together ten communities from the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, demonstrating the power of collective effort in shaping a brighter future for the next generation.

A New Chapter in the Festival’s History

The 2024 Quiz Competition was a key highlight in the lead-up to the grand climax of the NorDU festival, set for November 30, 2024. This year’s festival, themed “40 Years On: Fostering Youth Development Through Innovation and Technology,” underscored the vital role of young people in community development and the transformative potential of education and technology. The introduction of a quiz competition with a renewed focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects was part of the festival’s new direction, highlighting the community’s commitment to youth empowerment and educational advancement.

Tanyigbe, a region rich in cultural heritage, has always placed significant importance on community values and the well-being of its younger generation. The decision to shift the focus of the quiz competition from traditional history to ICT, Mathematics, and Science was a bold move led by the local executive council, which recognized the need to adapt to the changing times and equip the youth with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Leadership Embraces Change

During the opening ceremony, the Fiaga of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area and chairman of the 2024 NorDU festival, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI, addressed the participants, encouraging them to embrace change and innovation. “Even though change can be difficult, we must embrace it,” he said. “By expanding the scope of the competition, we are equipping the next generation of NorDU leaders with the tools they need to thrive in a technology-driven world.”

The significance of this year’s festival was further emphasized by the presence of key dignitaries, including Mr. Aaron Kweku Tsum Akwaboa, the Director for Strategy and Innovation at the Ministry of Education. He commended the Tanyigbe Traditional Area for their foresight in investing in the youth. “To see ten communities come together in unity and strength to invest in their youth is truly commendable. You are the leaders of tomorrow, and this investment in your knowledge will yield immense returns,” he remarked.

Mr. Kwabena Bempah Tando, Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), also applauded the community’s efforts and highlighted Ghana’s progress in education. He celebrated the historic milestone of more girls than boys sitting for the WASSCE exams this year, underscoring the strides being made in addressing gender disparities in education.

The Quiz Competition: A Thrilling Contest of Knowledge

The competition featured 30 contestants, with three representatives from each of the ten participating communities. After rigorous preliminary rounds, four communities—Hodzo, Avee, Tokokoe, and Tanyigbe—advanced to the finals. The final contest was a fierce battle of wits, with Tokokoe emerging as the champions. They claimed the top prize of laptops for their winning team members, while Hodzo secured second place, winning smartphones. Tanyigbe came third and took home scientific calculators for their representatives.

A participant from Tokokoe shared her excitement about the victory, expressing the pride and joy felt by her team. “Today is our first time winning this, and we are very happy. We knew from the beginning that we, the Tokokoe community, would win, and we have won, so we are very, very happy,” she said.

For the first time, the competition introduced trophies for the top three communities, adding an extra layer of prestige and recognition to the event. All participants received consolation prizes, including educational books and branded items, and the teachers who helped prepare the students were also acknowledged for their hard work and dedication.

A Promising Future for Youth Development

The success of the 2024 Quiz Competition has set a new benchmark for the NorDU festival and promises to shape its future approach to youth development and education. The focus on STEM subjects aligns with global trends emphasizing the importance of technological literacy and scientific understanding in today’s world. For the Tanyigbe Traditional Area, this innovative initiative reflects a forward-thinking vision that seeks to empower the youth with the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly complex and digital society.

As the festival draws to a close on November 30, the Tanyigbe Traditional Area will not only celebrate its rich heritage but also the remarkable achievements of its youth. With continued support from organizations such as Uniwiz Foundation, ARB Apex Bank, Flora Tissues, and Top Choco, the future of the festival looks brighter than ever.

The 2024 Quiz Competition is a testament to the transformative power of education, unity, and innovation. It is a shining example of how local communities, when united in purpose, can invest in the future of their youth and create lasting change that will resonate for generations to come.
