Students trapped after a school building collapsed due to severe rainfall

Many students from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have been reported trapped in a multi-story building that collapsed in the state. According to Sahara Reporters, the collapse happened on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, an area populated by students. The incident occurred after a heavy rainstorm on Saturday morning in Benin City, Edo State.

Rescue operations are still underway. An anonymous student reported that a university rescue team has managed to free some of the trapped individuals, but several have sustained serious injuries.

He also mentioned that the injured were quickly transported to the hospital for treatment.

“The rescue team is still looking for one individual who remains trapped in the debris. This person has called from within the building, asking for help, and efforts are continuing to locate and rescue them,” the student added.

The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is reportedly present at the scene, working with the university team to coordinate the rescue operations.

As of the latest update, the university management has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the total number of people affected.
