Pupils Stranded as Contractor Locks Galilea M/A Basic School Over Unpaid Debts

Pupils at the Galilea M/A Basic School in the Ga South Municipality have been left stranded after the Geos Anointing Construction Company locked a six-unit classroom block due to unpaid debts owed by the government.

This action follows the government’s failure to settle payments for a 12-unit classroom block project awarded to the company in 2017.

The Public Relations Officer for the company, Christopher Newman, revealed that the government has yet to compensate Geos Anointing Construction for completing the first phase of the project, which included the construction of the six-unit classroom block.

Despite multiple efforts to secure the funds, the government’s delay has placed the company in a financial bind.

“The failure of the government to make payment has pushed us into serious financial difficulties. Two houses belonging to the owner of the company have already been seized by banks due to outstanding loans,” Newman said in an interview with Adom News.

The contractor’s drastic decision has had an immediate impact on the pupils and teachers of the Galilea M/A Basic School, who have been left without a place to continue their educational activities.

For many of these students, the classroom block represents the only proper facility for learning, making the shutdown a critical issue.

In response to the situation, the Municipal Chief Executive and a team from the Ga South Assembly visited the school to negotiate with the contractor.

Their primary goal was to persuade Geos Anointing Construction to unlock the facility and allow teaching and learning to resume while discussions over payment continue.

As of now, the fate of the pupils remains uncertain as the government and contractor attempt to reach an agreement. The prolonged closure of the school could severely disrupt the students’ education if not resolved swiftly.

Parents and concerned stakeholders are urging the government to expedite the payment process and ensure that educational facilities are not compromised by such financial disputes.

The ongoing discussions between the Ga South Assembly and Geos Anointing Construction hold the key to resolving the impasse and bringing normalcy back to the Galilea M/A Basic School.
