President Mahama Approves Long-Awaited Promotions for Deputy Directors of Education

President John Dramani Mahama has granted approval for the promotion of Deputy Directors of Education who have remained stagnant in their roles for over a decade, marking a significant milestone in efforts to address longstanding teacher welfare concerns in Ghana.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, during a high-level meeting between the President and the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at the Jubilee House.
For years, Deputy Directors have lamented their stalled progression, with many serving between 10 and 15 years without advancement. The Ghana Education Service (GES) had previously attributed the delay in promotions to limited office space at higher administrative levels. However, President Mahama’s latest directive overrides these logistical barriers.
“Your approval means those affected will be promoted despite the absence of office accommodation,” Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told the President at the meeting. Also present were GNAT General Secretary, Mr. Thomas Tanko Musa, and renowned economist Mr. Kwame Pianim.
In addition to the promotions, President Mahama pledged to release all outstanding allowances owed to teachers, including the long-delayed 20 per cent out-of-station and deprived-area incentives.

The Education Minister confirmed that the President had also issued a directive requiring all new school infrastructure projects to include provisions for teacher accommodation — a move aimed at improving the working conditions of educators, particularly in remote areas.
The government is now awaiting a formal instruction from the President to the Minister of Finance to release the pledged allowances.
GNAT’s General Secretary, Mr. Musa, commended President Mahama on his re-election and expressed optimism that the President would fulfill his promises to Ghanaian teachers. “The Ghanaian people spoke clearly in December,” Mr. Musa said, adding that GNAT remains hopeful about the administration’s commitment to resolving issues affecting education workers.
Mr. Iddrisu assured the President that discussions with stakeholders in the education sector were progressing smoothly and that there was no immediate threat of industrial unrest.
The latest interventions are expected to boost morale among education professionals and restore confidence in government efforts to support teachers’ career growth and welfare.
