PAC Orders Recovery of GH₵17,700 Wrongfully Paid to Teacher in Donkorkrom

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has ordered the recovery of GH₵17,700 that was wrongfully disbursed as a transport allowance to a teacher in Donkorkrom, located in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District.

According to findings detailed in the Auditor-General’s latest report, Mr. Stephen Akomeah, a teacher stationed in Donkorkrom, received the transport allowance over a three-year period despite not having any form of physical disability. The allowance is specifically reserved for physically challenged staff members within the Ghana Education Service (GES), intended to assist them with mobility and transportation needs.

At a PAC sitting held on Friday, August 22, 2025, GES officials were summoned to explain the irregularity. However, the Committee expressed dissatisfaction with the justification provided and subsequently directed that the full amount be refunded within 30 days. The refund is to be paid into the Auditor-General’s recoveries account.

In addition, the PAC instructed the District Director of Education for Kwahu Afram Plains North to oversee and ensure the recovery process. The Committee issued a stern warning that should the refund not be made within the stipulated time frame, the District Director would be held personally liable for the amount.

The PAC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public funds, emphasizing that any wrongful or unauthorized payments must be promptly addressed and recovered.

This directive underscores the Committee’s ongoing efforts to enforce accountability within public institutions and ensure that public resources are used strictly for their intended purposes.
